Jo Barker - Educator Profile

Teaching Permaculture

I love sharing permaculture and feel very lucky to be able to do this. I like to think of myself as a participatory facilitator.
I trained in Teaching Permaculture creatively in 1996 with Robin and Sky and their only joint trip to the UK. More recently, I trained with Graham Bell and Rakesh in 2020. I have the PTTLs certificate. Preparing to teach in the lifelong sector. I am also a Permaculture Diploma Tutor.

I facilitated my first session in Permaculture in 1993 with Patrick Whitefield and have been regularly been giving talks and facilitating the Introductory weekends since. I have facilitated 14 Introductory weekends and assisted/ co-fascilitated on 4 full design courses and given input to many more. I have given more public talks and mini workshops on Permaculture than I can remember (at least 50) . I also run workshops in Transition, Forest Gardening, Goal setting, Basic Horticulture, Kinesiology, Confidence, Permaculture for and Zone00. I am currently promoting RetroSuburbia, David Holmgren's new brilliant book. I have created a synergy workshop called 'Survive and Thrive' which applies permaculture design to any problem while utilising techniques from energy medicine to create calm.

My newest projects are developing Home Permaculture/ Low Carbon Living training inspired by Holmgren's RetroSuburbia, A downshifters Guide to a Resilient Future.
My most important work is still deepening our relationship to the natural world through nature awareness and foraging. I have a mission to make garden foraging mainstream.

I was an enthusiastic Trustee of the Permaculture Association 2018 tp 2021
I am currently active with the Diploma Working Party working on a Foundation Diploma programme

Areas of Permaculture Design Experience:

Permaculture Land design I have designed around 35 Permaculture gardens including perennial food gardens / forest gardens/ community and school gardens. Much of my work has been with community groups in Manchester and Kent. The design ethos also informed my work as a Landscape Architect in 100's of other projects. In the last year I have designed 5 Permaculture gardens, a farm, an urban community park and a community food forest. I have been design support for five LAND learner sites and been developing my own homegarden. My garden was awarded a Gold from Kent Wildlife Trust's Wld about Gardens in 2013 and a client received a gold in 2014. I seem to specialise in edible wildlife gardens.

Peoplecare: I have been coaching individuals who are 'economically inactive' to explore starting a business combining energy medicine and life coaching. These coaching skills should be useful as a diploma tutor. I have been a Permaculture consultant on a number of community environmental projects.
