The Apricot Centre Permaculture Design Course is a part-time, non-residential course making it perfect for those wishing to study whilst working or have family commitments.

The course runs in bite size chunks so that you can digest the information, and self-study between the sessions. The course is unique in that is based at Huxhams Cross Farm which is in conversion to biodynamic status, it is a demonstration permaculture site and a rare example of farm scale permaculture in action. This enables us to show practical examples of permaculture on site as well as visiting other permaculture designed sites in South Devon.

Our Permaculture Design Course uses creative and practical teaching methods to enable you to develop and experience the principles and practices of permaculture design, with emphasis on guiding you to design in groups and individually with support from your tutors. This structure equips you with the skills go on to design and implement your own larger farms, smallholdings, community gardens or even your back garden.

The 12 day course covers:

· Permaculture principles and ethics
· Renewable energy and sustainable building
· Simple vegetable growing and fruit growing
. Soil management and fertility
· Forest gardening
· Simple livestock management
· Transition movement
· Design skills
· Visits to inspirational sites

The course is run by Marina O'Connell and Bob Mehew, directors of the Apricot Centre. Bob is a project manager and has project managed the development of the new Huxhams Cross farm, he is an expert at using permaculture design for projects and business development. Marina O’Connell is a horticulturist, permaculture designer, tutor and a biodynamic farmer. She has over 30 years of experience of training and growing in sustainable food systems.

During the course we hope several of the 30 varieties of tomatoes growing on site will be harvested - a great opportunity to learn about yield extension. It's also a marvel for the eyes!

Location:
Ekbacka Gård is a lovely self sustainable farm set on 20ha and located 30 kilometres from Kalmar and 15 km from the Baltic coast. Using permaculture techniques and biodynamical farming it is a fabulous example of food production and sustainable living. Since 2006 the farm has been run by Bo, Katrin and the help of their 5 children and volunteers. They added their animals (horses, goats, chickens, dogs, cats) and their dream of developing an eco village. This is a great opportunity for students to see a real project where permaculture is combined successfully with community and family life.

We are offering a highly affordable and beautiful experience of learning and inspiration, in our PDC course. Based in the natural and gorgeous surroundings of the Sierra Nevada mountains, it is a 14 day long residential course, that we have tried to design in the most balanced way that we can.
Making sure that the intense theoretical lessons in the classroom are balanced out by practical workshops and exciting 'field trips' to visit farms, communities and gardens in the local valleys and mountains.
We feel it is important to see the subjects that we study being put into action, experiencing the ways people put the ideas into effect.
Our local area includes many different eco-systems from the snowy peaks and sides of the mountains where it’s more similar to northern Europe, all the way down to the completely sub-tropical coastline on the Mediterranean Sea. So some of the information that we learn is certainly applicable to your own regions of the world.
The local area also includes many opportunities for continuing your permaculture journey, such as Volunteering on farms, practising design skills, working at the local seed bank, it’s a hive of eco-minded activity!
Taught by local farmer Ras John Cresswell and with special guest teacher Cathy Whitefield, who has had great experience facilitating and teaching Permaculture courses for many years in the UK, with her partner and famous U.K. permaculture godfather, Patrick Whitefield. As well as teaching she will also be helping with facilitation for the course itself. The course will also include five other guest teachers.
This course has a maximum of twenty people, but we had many requests for the last course, so please be quick in booking if you want a place!

Summary:

The New School Permaculture PDC is centred on the needs of the student so that you can get what you need and want.
This course is presented by creative non formal education methods that are based on creating a bridge between the right and left side of the brain, so that the analytical and creative abilities of the students get fully stimulated and get the most out of the experience...for many people is the most empowering and inspiring transformative process of their lives...and they carry this with them every were they go....and thats our goal.

The course follows a set syllabus and leads to the internationally recognized Permaculture Design Certificate.
Taught by Helder Valente the director of the New School Permaculture and New school local and international teams .
Helder studied and worked with Bill Mollison, Sepp Holzer, Doug Bullock, Rosemary Morrow, Darren dougherty, Ernst Gotsh and others, and is now teaching all over the world.

He started in 2009 teaching permaculture to students at the agriculture university and since then learning and teaching on many different climates. While living in the city he dedicated 3 years on developing a urban permaculture project in the center of Lisbon and co created several Permaculture Institutes.
Helder never stopped and this last months spent his time working with Quechua farmers in the Andes and designing projects in the Amazon jungle.
