Summary:

We are excited to announce a PDC with room for 24 participants in the beautiful archipelago of Orkney led by Graham Bell. A unique location, with a fascnating and often underappreciated place in Britain's cultural and historical heritage, Orkney provides the backdrop for this opportunity supported by Pebble Trust, via Permaculture Scotland's ScotLAND Project, and hosted by Stromness Community Garden. This will hopefully be the first such course of many to target social, economic and ecological regeneration in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.

The price of this course is on a sliding scale. The full rate, including 12 days of tuition, lunches, trips out and evening events is:

  • £300, for unwaged or irregular earners
  • £450, for regular earners on a low household income
  • £700, for those who are financially secure
  • £950, for those who are financially comfortable

Payment by instalments will be possible, as long as the full amount is paid within a month of the course ending. The most expensive ticket is essentially a 'gift ticket', as it enables more people who can afford the cheapest ticket to attend (which is essentially a bursary rate as this undercuts our 'break even point'). If you are very keen to attend the course, but find that the cost is prohibitive, please get in touch to find some alternative arrangement.

For those who need it, we have arranged for accommodation options near to the venue. August is the peak of peak season for Orkney, so we are very lucky to have this accommodation reserved for you! Please see articles linked for further information about the options available, and enquire with Rachael when you book to reserve your place.

We return to Sunseed for our 9th course! We love Sunseed!

Sunseed, a non-formal education project for the transition towards sustainability, is based in an ancient little Andalusian village with a long historical background. The electricity is provided by solar panels, a nearby water source provides water for daily use and natural water treatments are used for sewage. The village is home for about 50 people and is a hub for creative projects like Sunseed, Pita-Escuela, Casa de la Realidad and Cultura de la Tierra.

Sunseed is located in a valley of the endangered Rio Aguas in the natural reserve of Karst en Yesos de Sorbas, famous for its gypsum crystal caves. Various hiking trails are located in the valley, including a route to the source of the river passing through the natural pools.

Sunseed was first conceived in 1982 during a talk at a green festival by Harry Hart, co-founder of the charity Green Deserts. In August 1986, having rented a house in arid Southeast Spain, a small joint project began looking at practical ways of combating desertification. In March 1987 Green Deserts withdrew and Sunseed Desert Technology and The Sunseed Trust were inaugurated to direct the project.

The New School Permaculture PDC is centred on the needs of the student. So you get what you need.
This course is presented by creative non formal education methods, that are based on creating a bridge between the right and left side of the brain, so that the analytical and creative abilities of the students get fully stimulated and get the most out of the experience...for many people is the most empowering and inspiring transformative process of their lives...and they carry this with them everywere they go....and thats our goal.

The course follows a set syllabus and leads to the internationally recognised Permaculture Design Certificate.

Taught by Helder Valente of the New School Permaculture. Helder studied and worked with Bill Mollison, Sepp Holzer, Doug Bullock, Rosemary Morrow, Darren dougherty, Ernst Gotsh and others, and is now teaching all over the world, he started in 2009 teaching permaculture to students at the agriculture university and since then learning and teaching on many different climates. While living in the city he dedicated 3 years on developing a urban permaculture project in the center of Lisbon and co created the Portuguese Permaculture Institute. That's how it all started. Helder never stopped and this last months spent his time working with Quechua farmers in the Andes and designing projects in the Amazon jungle.

The Permaculture Design Course is a 72-hour often life-changing experience, accredited by the UK Permaculture Association.

Over the period of 6 months we will come together as a learning community to explore practical and creative solutions for building resilient neighbourhoods and designing abundant eco-systems.

We will discover how we can work with, rather than against nature to fulfil our human needs whilst caring for the earth and the people.

The course has a strong practical emphasis on ecological and social design thinking and how this can be applied in different parts of our life and society.

The course offers us the opportunity to face the predicaments of climate breakdown and the biodiversity crisis and form our own healthy response to these challenges.

“I feel like I know a secret and want to share it with the world”

Do you seek to live compassionately without the unnecessary exploitation of people, animals and the environment? Are you concerned about climate change, peak oil and future generations? Are you interested in changing how we interact with other species, ecosystems and our human communities? Then this full permaculture design course is for you!

Reducing your intake of animal products is a powerful and positive step towards a more compassionate lifestyle, and greatly reduces your environmental impacts. Yet even a vegan diet can have a high carbon footprint if still reliant on processed foods from industrialised agricultural systems. These often remove trees and forests from land in order to grow fossil fuel dependent annual crops, or rely heavily on imported products, cash crops and exploited labour.

The Veganic way combined with permaculture design systems can create a world that is not just ‘sustainable’ but truly REGENERATIVE, restoring forests, repairing ecosystems, building soils, increasing biodiversity, developing local economies and addressing issues of social justice and animal liberation!

This course will be held over ten days (two blocks of 5 days) over the summer of 2020, and is suitable for all. The content will be covering universal permaculture ethics, principles and design methods, however please note that the focus will be on non-animal based and stock-free systems.
