Summary:

We are excited to announce a PDC with room for 24 participants in the beautiful archipelago of Orkney led by Graham Bell. A unique location, with a fascnating and often underappreciated place in Britain's cultural and historical heritage, Orkney provides the backdrop for this opportunity supported by Pebble Trust, via Permaculture Scotland's ScotLAND Project, and hosted by Stromness Community Garden. This will hopefully be the first such course of many to target social, economic and ecological regeneration in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.

The price of this course is on a sliding scale. The full rate, including 12 days of tuition, lunches, trips out and evening events is:

  • £300, for unwaged or irregular earners
  • £450, for regular earners on a low household income
  • £700, for those who are financially secure
  • £950, for those who are financially comfortable

Payment by instalments will be possible, as long as the full amount is paid within a month of the course ending. The most expensive ticket is essentially a 'gift ticket', as it enables more people who can afford the cheapest ticket to attend (which is essentially a bursary rate as this undercuts our 'break even point'). If you are very keen to attend the course, but find that the cost is prohibitive, please get in touch to find some alternative arrangement.

For those who need it, we have arranged for accommodation options near to the venue. August is the peak of peak season for Orkney, so we are very lucky to have this accommodation reserved for you! Please see articles linked for further information about the options available, and enquire with Rachael when you book to reserve your place.

Summary:

One way of understanding Permaculture Design is to call it 'the art of becoming indigenous'; where the roots of many of the problems facing humankind stem from disconnection from the land and from each other; whereas the true capital of resilience lies in strong communities rooted in their relationships with the land that sustains them.

Through exploring and understanding our own stories, we can empower ourselves to create new narratives around how we treat land and people; moving away from the military-industrial paradigm of destruction and exploitation towards a more equitable and abundant future: using the skills of permaculture design to actualise our vision.

Taking place over 3 long weekends at 3 spectacular venues in Snowdonia, North Wales, this course will reference indigenous cultures around the world and their stories; drawing on the rich culture and history of the Welsh land and people to illustrate and frame the concepts.

Cae Mabon has been called the 'Welsh Shangri La' and is a centre for the exploration of spirituality and the being human of the human being, as well as a show-casing a multitude of traditional building techniques. The first part of the course will be held here. It is possible to take this part as a stand-alone Introductory Course or to continue to Parts 2 and 3 for a full PDC.

Tyddyn Teg is a Community Supported Agriculture project supplying over 100 local families with fresh vegetables. The second part of the course, focussing on the practical skills of land management, food production and community building, will take place here.

Henbant is a mixed farm producing livestock, fruit and vegetables on a small scale as well as show-casing innovative building techniques and renewable energy installations. The third part of the course, focussing on integrating livestock and humans into natural systems will take place here.

Permaculture design is all about creating ecologically sound ways of living based on observing natural systems and applying ecological principles to what we do. It equips you to care for the earth, yourself, and others in ways that are resilient, abundant, and rewarding - and it can be a truly life-changing and empowering approach to learn.

The basic qualification for doing permaculture design is a Permaculture Design Certificate. This course offers you the opportunity to gain your PDC by taking three modules over a period of several months. These, plus a minimum of 16 hours guided home study, cover the full PDC curriculum. The Permaculture Association will issue your final certificate, which is recognised by other permaculture practitioners internationally.
Modules 1 and 3 of the course will be held at the Centre for Alternative Technology in mid-Wales, a world renowned centre for learning and demonstrating ecological ways of living,. Module 2 will be held at Blaeneinion, an inspiring conservation & permaculture project set in 75 acres of land at the head of Artists Valley, near Machynlleth: http://www.blaeneinion.co.uk/ .
